What are cookies and what purposes can they be used for?
A “cookie” is a small text file created by certain websites on the user’s computer when the user accesses a particular website, for the purpose of storing and transferring information. Cookies are sent by a web server (the computer on which the website being visited is running) to the user’s browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) and stored on the user’s computer; they are then sent back to the website when the user visits it again.
Some operations could not be performed without the use of cookies, which are therefore technically necessary in certain cases. In other cases, the website uses cookies to facilitate and simplify browsing or to enable users to access specific services they have requested.
Cookies may remain on the system for extended periods and may also contain a unique identification code. This enables the websites that use them to track users’ browsing activity within the website for statistical or advertising purposes, thereby creating a personalised profile based on the pages the user has visited and displaying and/or sending targeted advertising (so-called Behavioural Advertising).
Which cookies are used and what are their main purposes?
The Data Controller provides below details of the specific categories of cookies used, their purposes and the consequences of deselecting them:
| FIRST/THIRD PARTY | PURPOSE’ | RETENTION PERIOD | CONSEQUENCE OF DESELECTION | |
